Embracing the Season of Citrus

Citrus fruits are in season  in January and stand out not only for their vibrant flavors but also for their many health benefits. Rich in vitamin C, antioxidants, and fiber, citrus fruits like oranges, grapefruits, lemons, and limes are particularly beneficial when consumed at their peak.

Citrus fruits contain unique flavonoids that have anti-inflammatory properties, and the high fiber content aids in digestive health. This fiber acts as a prebiotic, feeding the good bacteria in the gut, thereby promoting a healthy gut flora.

Here are some easy ways to incorporate more citrus into your diet:

  1. As a snack or desert  – try a new variety of orange – there are so many in season right now!

  2. As marmalade topping on your whole grain toast (look for brands that are sweetened with fruit juice rather than sugar)

  3. Add the juice of a lemon 50/50 with olive oil plus a pinch of salt and pepper and some lemon zest to make a salad dressing or marinade for fish or chicken

  4. Add orange or grapefruit slices to a salad, like this or this.

  5. Blend 1 peeled orange with 1 cup Greek yogurt for a homemade creamsicle (add a little honey and ¼ cup milk of choice to thin and sweeten if desired)
